The case of Naboth’s vineyard is a story from the Bible that illustrates the injustice and oppression of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, and the judgment of God on their actions. Here is a summary of the story:
- Naboth was a farmer who owned a vineyard in Jezreel, near the palace of King Ahab of Israel. Ahab wanted to buy or exchange the vineyard for a vegetable garden, but Naboth refused, because the vineyard was his ancestral inheritance and he could not sell it according to the law of God12
- Ahab became depressed and angry, and Jezebel decided to plot against Naboth. She wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the elders and nobles of Naboth’s city. She instructed them to proclaim a fast and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. Then she hired two scoundrels to accuse Naboth of cursing God and the king. The elders and nobles did as Jezebel ordered, and Naboth was stoned to death by the people. Ahab then took possession of the vineyard13
- God sent the prophet Elijah to confront Ahab and Jezebel, and to pronounce God’s judgment on them and their house. Elijah told Ahab that in the place where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood, dogs will lick up his blood, and that Jezebel will be eaten by dogs. He also told him that his descendants will be cut off and that his house will be destroyed14
- The prophecy was fulfilled in the following chapters, when Ahab was killed in battle and his blood was washed in the pool of Samaria, where dogs licked it up. Jezebel was thrown out of a window and trampled by horses, and her body was eaten by dogs. Ahab’s son Joram was killed by Jehu, who also wiped out the rest of Ahab’s family and followers15
The story of Naboth’s vineyard shows how God cares about justice and righteousness, and how He punishes those who abuse their power and oppress the poor and the faithful. It also shows how God protects His people and His covenant, and how He fulfills His word through His prophets16
